The inspiration for this unique light art project came from the changeable nature of Chinese ink painting. Fang Hu and his team sought to express this inscrutability using light. The result is a control mode where the light can fade in and out by ten to eighty percent, creating a man-made inscrutability that mirrors the changes of reality.
What sets this design apart is the use of simple, pure light waves. Projection lamps were chosen for their ability to clearly and purely show shadows in space with clear boundaries. This "real expression" allows viewers to see the original appearance of the object without being disturbed or influenced by various other factors, including the influence from light.
The realization of this design involved extensive lamp tests to cover the whole facade with shadows in the limited space. The solution was a combination of 24 lamps located in the center of the space, generating light that completely covers the facade. The lamps, surrounded by lines, form an integral whole that resembles a "ball" with sharp edges and corners.
The interaction of the design is equally fascinating. When all the lamps are 100% lit, the ground illumination can reach 150LUX, and the true lines and the fake lines of the shadows integrate together flawlessly. The lines appear on the facade, the top surface, the floor, every corner of the space, and even on the viewer's face and body. As soon as people enter the space, they become part of the lines.
The project, which started in October 2017 in Beijing and finished in January 2018, faced several challenges. The artist required that the shadows of the lines clearly cover a space of 10m * 10m * 10m without deformation, dark areas, or overlapping of the shadow. The design also had to avoid the discomfort of direct glare to viewers, allowing them to only feel the charm of light and shadow and not notice the existence of lamps. The result is a design that matches the theme of "Chinese ink painting".
This unique design was awarded the Golden A' Lighting Products and Fixtures Design Award in 2021. The award is granted to marvelous, outstanding, and trendsetting creations that reflect the designer's prodigy and wisdom. They are venerated products and bright ideas that advance art, science, design, and technology, embodying extraordinary excellence and significantly impacting the world with their desirable characteristics.
